What a pleasure it was to attend the District Three Democratic Club meeting last night honoring past President of the Board and District Three Supervisor Aaron Peskin.
The meeting was held at the "joyful" O'Reilly's Restaurant on Green Street. The back room was full of people who had come to say thank you and hear from the Supervisor and hear his thoughts about San Francisco politics.
Peskin seemed happy and relaxed and pleased to be just a regular person being able to walk down the street without a cell phone in his ear - just being in his own neighborhood - District Three.
Peskin talked about becoming Supervisor when District Elections went into effect and what a difference District Elections has made in our city in regards to tenant protection, environmental issues and budget reform.
Questions from the audience included does the grand jury make a difference? (depends on the timing), JROTC (against) , budget deficit (will be tough), Community Justice Center (voted against), Port sustainability (very difficult), is he running for office (not running for anything), Presidio and Fisher (not appropriate) , renaming streets (against), water rates (we are paying our share of the costs) , loss of newspapers (loosing freedom of the press) ,commercial rent control (won't happen), Citi-Apartments (fought them) and Academy of Art(Planning Department issues). Does he twitter? (no!)
The District Democratic Club presented a wonderful cake from "I Dream of Cake" which said:
"District 3 Democratic Club in recognition of Aaron Peskin's 8 years of service to District 3 residents as Supervisor and President of the Board of Supervisors". The cake was a map of District Three with little objects including a parrot! So adorable!
