It was such an honor Thursday night to hear Mike Miller speak about his new book "A Community Organizer's Tale: People and Power in San Francisco". The book is about the rise and fall of the powerful multi-issue Mission Coalition Organization during the Alioto administration.
The reading was held at Crossroads Cafe & Book Store at Delancey Street. We had the special treat of hearing Mimi Silbert, the leader of Delancey Street give the introduction. She talked about Mike Miller being a student of Saul Alinsky and organizing in the Mission. She said Mike's work exemplifies "together we have power".
Mike Miller talked about being born in San Francisco and going to University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, organizing with Saul Alinsky and eventually working with the Mission Coalition Organization (MCO). He talked about organizing tenants, obtaining jobs, neighborhood organizing - he looked for willingness - and then responded to their demands.
He said we need an independent group pushing our agenda, not the "president's agenda". We should listen to the people, don't stand in front - let them tell you their stories then think through what is needed.
He started ORGANIZE! Training Center in San Francisco which is devoted to building and strengthening people power.
